While a healthy, balanced diet is the best way to obtain the necessary vitamins and minerals during pregnancy, expectant mothers may experience nutritional deficiencies due to symptoms like morning sickness and loss of appetite.

It is best for women to start taking prenatal vitamins before pregnancy. The baby’s neural tube (which later becomes the brain and spinal cord) develops during the first month, often before a woman realizes she is pregnant. In general, it’s advisable for women of childbearing age to take prenatal vitamins regularly.
Some vitamins may worsen nausea, which many pregnant women already experience, especially those that come in large tablets.
