Are There Food High in Estrogen?

By Blazma

Since estrogen plays a major role in many bodily functions, its low levels can be extremely harmful. So, are there food high in estrogen? Continue reading to find out the answer.

Are There Food High in Estrogen?

Estrogen is a hormone produced by the ovaries, adrenal glands, and fat cells in the body. It contributes to the development of female sexual and reproductive organs and plays a major role in many bodily functions in both men and women. Estrogen supports cardiovascular health, maintains bone strength, protects the brain, and regulates mood. But the question remains: Are there food high in estrogen?

The answer is yes. Some plant-based food contain compounds similar to estrogen, known as phytoestrogens. When consumed, the body absorbs them during digestion and recognizes them as estrogen, allowing them to bind to its receptors in the body’s cells and support its natural functions.

However, it is important to note that most research has shown that phytoestrogens provide health benefits when consumed in quantities of around 50 milligrams daily, which is equivalent to half a cup of boiled soybeans, for example.

What Food Are High in Estrogen?

In general, a plant-based diet is higher in estrogen than other diets. Four types of phytoestrogens are found in plants: isoflavones, stilbenes, coumestans, and lignans. Below is a list of food that contain high levels of these plant estrogens:

  1. Fruits

Certain types of fruits contain resveratrol, a stilbene-type phytoestrogen that boosts estrogen levels in the body and may protect against some cancers, inflammation, and heart diseases. Examples of such fruits include:

  • Apples.
  • Grapes.
  • Pomegranates.
  • Strawberries.
  • Blueberries and cranberries.

Additionally, peaches have been shown to have high levels of lignans, so consuming two servings a week may reduce the risk of breast cancer in women.

  1. Vegetables

Examples of vegetables high in phytoestrogens include:

  • Broccoli.
  • Cabbage.
  • Potatoes.
  • Carrots.
  • Onions.
  • Celery.
  • Spinach.
  • Garlic.
  • Sweet potatoes.
  1. Seeds and Nuts

The following seeds and nuts are also high in phytoestrogens, but it is important to consume the recommended daily portions, as most nuts are high in healthy fats:

  • Cashews.
  • Almonds.
  • Pistachios.
  • Peanuts.
  • Flaxseeds.
  • Sesame seeds.
  • Sunflower seeds.
  1. Legumes

The following legumes contain phytoestrogens and are considered food high in estrogen:

  • Chickpeas.
  • Lentils.
  • Soybeans.
  • Peas.
  1. Soy Products

Soybeans are known for their high phytoestrogen content, specifically isoflavones, which can increase estrogen levels in women during menopause. They also contain proteins, potassium, magnesium, and B vitamins. Examples of soy products include:

  • Edamame.
  • Soy milk.
  • Soy sauce.
  • Tofu.
  1. Whole Grains

Most whole grains contain lignans, a type of plant estrogen that can reduce the risk of heart disease and osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Examples include:

  • Barley.
  • Oats.
  • Quinoa.
  • Rice.
  • Wheat flour.

What Drinks Are High in Estrogen?

Some drinks, such as tea, coffee, and red wine, contain small amounts of lignans, a type of phytoestrogen. However, if these drinks are consumed alone without other plant-based estrogens, the levels of this hormone in the body are unlikely to be affected.

Blazma offers several types of estrogen hormone tests, such as estriol (E3 Estrogen) and estradiol tests (E2 Estrogen).
