A urine total protein test detects the amounts of protein present in the urine. The kidneys filter albumin and other proteins from the blood so that the urine may contain small amounts of protein. However, problems with the urinary tract, can cause large amounts of protein to leak into the urine.
A total serum protein test measures the total amount of protein in the blood. It also measures the amounts of two major groups of proteins in the blood: albumin and globulin. A test for total serum protein reports separate values for total protein, albumin, and globulin.
The determination of IgG antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii is used to assess the serological status to T. gondii and is indicative of an acute or latent infection. The detection of IgM antibodies to T. gondii indicates an acute, recent or reactivated Toxoplasma infection.
IgM antibodies are the only class produced by an unborn baby. When Toxoplasma IgM antibodies are present in a newborn, they indicate a congenital infection. If the molecular test is positive for T. gondii DNA, then the person tested has an active toxoplasmosis infection.
A transferrin saturation test tells us how much iron in the blood is bound to transferrin. A low transferrin saturation usually indicates iron deficiency while a high saturation often confirms haemochromatosis.
