Symptoms of Chlamydia in Men

By Blazma

Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted bacterial infection, with 1.5 million cases reported annually, though the actual number is likely higher. While it is more common in women, it is also prevalent among men. This article focuses specifically on the symptoms of chlamydia in men.

Symptoms of Chlamydia in Men

Chlamydia is often called a "silent infection" as most people with chlamydia (50–70%) do not experience any symptoms or signs. However, when symptoms do appear, the most notable ones in men include:

  • Symptoms Related to the Reproductive System

Chlamydia typically causes the following symptoms in men:

  1. Difficulty urinating and a burning or painful sensation during urination.
  2. White, watery, or cloudy discharge from the penis.
  3. Swelling and pain in one or both testicles and the surrounding area.
  4. Redness, swelling, or itching at the opening of the urethra at the tip of the penis.
  • Symptoms Affecting Other Body Parts

Chlamydia can also cause symptoms in other parts of the body, especially those that come into contact with semen or vaginal fluids. These include:

  1. Anus: Pain, bleeding, discomfort, and mucus-like discharge.
  2. Throat: This bacterial infection can lead to a sore throat.
  3. Eyes: If bacteria enter the eyes, they may cause redness, discharge, and pain.

It is important to note that chlamydia and gonorrhea infections often occur together. Symptoms of chlamydia in men may resemble those of gonorrhea but persist even after gonorrhea treatment.

When Do Chlamydia Symptoms Appear in Men?

While most cases of chlamydia are asymptomatic, symptoms can appear within one week to three months after infection. In some cases, symptoms may take longer to emerge.

How Is Chlamydia Diagnosed in Men?

Unfortunately, detecting chlamydia can be challenging because most cases are asymptomatic, and even when symptoms occur, they are often non-specific. This increases the risk of long-term complications.

If a doctor suspects chlamydia, they may recommend diagnostic tests such as:

  • Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT): This test involves collecting a urine sample or taking a swab from the urethra or anus (for women, a vaginal or cervical swab is used). The sample is then analyzed in a lab to detect the bacteria responsible for chlamydia.
  • Blood Tests: These tests can identify specific antibodies against the chlamydia bacteria, indicating a past or current infection.

Additionally, the doctor may request tests for other sexually transmitted infections, such as gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV.

Blazma provides all the diagnostic tests your doctor may request to detect current or past chlamydia infections or other sexually transmitted diseases, including Chlamydia Trachomatis Ab-IgM Test, Chlamydia Trachomatis Ab-IgG Test, and STD Disease Test Package (PCR).
